Whereas Moema quiii is found on the south bank of the Rio Madre de Dios (MDD) and up the Rio Tambopata, this fish is found on the North bank of the MDD and with this large river acting a a barrier, it may be a different species. The entire Gamiana district is under pressure from land conversion to agriculture uses to feed the rapidly growing city of Puerto Maldonado nearby. Many of these habitats for annual fishes are being converted to growing food crops such as Papaya.

The habitat is shown at the end of the wet season. Two weeks later it was dry.
