Values below 50% are not shown. Fundulopanchax species (a monophyletic genus according to Murphy and Collier (1999)) were used to root the trees. Chromaphyosemion species formed a monophyletic group (bootstrap values ranged from 67 to 75%). Aphyosemion (except A. hera) and Fundulopanchax sequences used are the same than those used in Murphy and Collier (1999) and are available in GenBank. Species identiWcations for Scheel (1974, 1990) karyotypes do not necessarily follow this author as taxonomy has changed since 1990.
