Sjostedt travelled by boat and it would presumably be difficult to go any further up the river, it's waterfall after narrow waterfall after rapids for quite a way and would not be possible I would think, to go upstream in a boat unless you want to carry it over rocky terrain or through the dense jungle.
There is a bridge across the river at the first waterfall, about 50 Km from the coast but it does not show up on road maps. Nearby is what Scheel referred to in 1968 as a plantation; the presence of oil palm trees in the area confirms it still is. The closest town with a road is Mundemba about 3 km to the northeast. Scheel found no SJO here in his visits to the area. That is, one attempt to collect SJO at he purported terra typica failed.
